I have been privileged to get an early copy of The Unknown Warrior by the amazing John Nichol.
I have had the misfortune to have experienced conflicts first hand and experienced the horrors of death an injury. I have had the privilege of walking many historical battlefields from the First and Second World Wars and others, across the globe – trying to understand the human impact is always difficult, even with combat experience.
John has captured it in all its horror – his descriptions are as vivid and masterfully crafted as those of Sebastian Faulks in his book Birdsong, actually they are better – you can live the horror and those that have been in conflict will find the sights, smells, sounds and more just come flooding back. He brings the reality of war to life in all its graphic horror but captures the humanity and humility from many who survive so superbly.
This book is evocative, thought and memory provoking (which is a challenge in itself) but most of all, an amazing tribute to the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey and all of the Unknown Warriors of conflict. He weaves the fascinating story of the Unknown Warrior into the emotions and reality associated with casualties of todays conflicts
Given the state of the world today – this is a must read this, it is a clear study of why we should never allow conflict like this to happen again ever.
I can honestly say this is John’s best book yet (having read them all) – the emotions it invokes are hugely powerful – he has captured the human impact of conflict better than I have ever read anywhere else – so very very powerful.
